Success and HappinessHi friend,
Good day to you.
Lets continue to discuss about STRESS today.
The Connection Between Depression & StressWhen we look at specific examples of mental health problems, we discover that stressful negative life events account for a large number of depression cases. In 1969, when a team of investigators looked at the life events of 185 depressed patients prior to the onset of their depression, they discovered that, in almost all cases, there was an overwhelming excess of negative life events or events involving some sort of personal loss.
Many studies such as these have clearly demonstrated that depressed individuals experience more stressful life events in the months that precede the start of their depression. Moreover, the risk of depression is thought to increase five to six times during the six months following a tragic or severely stressful episode.
Stress events especially likely to cause depression are: loss of relatives or loved ones, loss of a job, relocation, severely threatening episodes, and chronically undesirable experiences. But in many cases, the stress events that cause depression are small, repetitive occurrences rather than major stress events.
Depression makes us repeat our symptoms over and over again, leaving us open to negative conditioning and habit formation that will perpetuate the depression. Unless we put into practice strategies for reversing or coping with depression, our habits will become harder to break and could remain with us throughout life. But if there's one positive side to depression, it's that, in almost every case, it's easy to recognize.
The signs and symptoms of depression are a warning signal that tell us our stress response has gone overboard and is beginning to cause serious problems. These early warning signals allow us to deal with our stress immediately and effectively before depression slips into a dangerous and chronic stage.
Perhaps the single most important factor that separates a depression prone individual from a depression resistant one is the former's inability to cope effectively with negative life stresses. Once depression prone individuals learn coping strategies, many of them begin to lead normal, healthy lives.
For instance, it was shown that patients at a community mental health center, who participated in a 30-hour program designed to teach relaxation exercises, social skills, and attitude and behavior modification, had significantly lower levels of depression and more ability to solve problems and control their lives than individuals who didn't participate in the program. Other studies have shown that depression increases as the number of stress events increase but decreases as the number of relationships and social interactions increase.
Ok, that the sharing for tody, folk.
Yeah, I know, today discussion is a little bit dry, but
